Pre-Race Anxiety

I can't sleep. I'm pretty anxious about this run.  I'm pretty scared about the hills so if I beat my PR, even by a minute, I will be super happy and my confidence will probably jump to an all time high! I'm thinking about so many things for the run.  To wear my CEP compression sleeves or not? Lunarglide+ 2 or 3? I'm actually thinking about taking my Saucony Kinvara 2.  (I also want to buy the Saucony Cortana to try em out. Supposedly like Kinvara with a little more cushioning.) What shirt am I going to wear? What shorts? Do I wear my running tights? How cold is going to be? And just so many things. I've never been to Morgan Hill except in passing and I'm debating if I want to go to the expo to check out the actual place since I've never been there, but it is pretty far from me.

If that picture looks familiar, it should.

I did pick up my packet from a local running store today. I got my bib, shirt, & the oh so ever present cinch bag. Haha! I have more cinch bags from the last six months than my entire life thus far! All from racing events.  I'm so excited. The shirt is awesome. Its from K-Swiss and its not that typical slick & shiny material for a running shirt. Its 100% poly but its textured! Its also one of my favorite colors, blue! It has the principal sponsor's company name on the back, but I don't mind. They are a local company and I love supporting local companies.  So excited!

I'm also confirmed for this:

Like that "!Double" by my name?! I do too! That means I completed the series and I get my series medal! I'm so damn excited!!! They have some awesome bling. They are adding another race to the series next year and I'm thinking about completing all three for another medal, but it means I have to do all three next year.  Its only two this year. So while "series medal" seems a little over kill, I'll take it!

While at the store to pick up my packet, I wanted to buy another pair of CEP Compression but in sock form. I wanted the pink ones but they only had the sleeves in my size.  I can't believe how expensive they are. I really want to wear my sleeve but I wanted the socks. I did find their Injini's were a lot cheaper than retail! I didn't buy any. I ended up buying two Clif Bars, pumpkin & peppermint stick, a mini pink Blender Bottle for my protein shakes, & laundry detergent made specially for workout clothes. I spend so much on my clothes, I want to make sure that they retain their wickness ability and their coating and stuff.  I had 10% off because of the event so it was all good! I just wish they had the CEPs! If not, I'll have to wait for a sale. Hopefully this upcoming season of sales is kind. I've been needing new clothes because as my friend put it, I'm "disappearing" and a lot of my clothes, workout & normal life,  don't fit anymore. Its a blessing, but up to now I'm still wearing the same clothes!

Anyway! I should try and sleep. Going to go for a 3 miler to stretch out the legs for Sunday!

October Is...

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH!!!
sweaty swag right after today's p90x session!

Rockin the pink sports bra!!!

As some of you know, I hate cancer.  My grandpa is a lung cancer survivor and I know a lot of people around me who had cancer and also survived in a way we didn't want, but I know they are in a better place.  I hate cancer so much.

Here are fact sheets, I found online

>>CDC Fact Sheet [PDF]
>>Breast Cancer Fact Sheet
>>World Health Organization Cancer Fact Sheet

I read through a lot and I just picked three that I liked, but in all of them there is one running theme: you can't really determine who will get cancer, but in all of the sheets I read, a way to lower your risk for cancer, breat or any type, is to maintain a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight, and stay active! In all of the fact sheets, it was all there; all these experts can't be wrong can they?

A benefit that I never thought of when I first started to "keep active," I put " " because lets face it, I have lazy days, is getting to know your body.  The more self aware you are in terms of your own physical body, the more you know if something is wrong or off. I never thought of that in the beginning but knowing my body means I know when to rest, I know when I can push it, I know when something doesn't feel right, and just so many other things.  I'm still getting to know my body because I feel like I'm going through puberty all over again while on this journey, but I believe its super important to know your body.

Just wanted to give a nod to Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  You can never bring too much awareness to something that affects so many people and so many lives.

Lets all give a big middle finger to cancer!!!!

Strength Training 10/12/11 & Random Running Babbles!

Want spidey tingles?!

YOU GOT IT DUDE!!!

Had 2 Scoops of jack3d and I seriously never learn. I'm really caffeine sensitive. I don't drink soda and coffee- I love coffee I just don't make it well and don't find myself at a coffee shop enough. The most caffeine I get is from tea, green tea. And I only have jack3d like 2-3 times a week so I don't cycle off jack3d. Today, I had one scoop, waited 15 minutes and decided to have another one.  It wasn't a mistake, it was just spidey tingles galore. Even my ears were tingling! Also I couldn't focus till about halfway the workout. I had to force myself to concentrate. Which is really the point of jack3d, to focus you. Anyway, I love this stuff! I need to finish my jar so I can try another flavor.

I did shoulders and arms. I really need to buy a pull up bar. I'll probably buy it with in the month.  Right now my biceps hurt.  Just my right. I kinda slacked off on stretching so thats probably it. I know my right hand is stronger than my left too.  I feel bad for my left arm, but what you gonna do? Can I use a heavier weight for my left arm only? I'm also beginning to love chair dips! I hate those things.  Back when I first started I'll do like five. Now I'll blaze through 15. One thing I also notice is that I get light headed weight lifting. I really need to intake more iron. I think I'll eat nothing but spinach for a week. Be Popeye for a week and see if it helps my blood count. to rise.

Another thing I need to work on both in running and P90x is pacing! I don't want to "pump" iron, I'm not sure where I got this idea from and I'm not sure if its right or wrong, but doesn't "pumping" increase muscle size as opposed to slow lifting? Or just reps? I do 12-15, and I'm about to move from 8 to 10 pound weights! I think I'm wrong on the "pumping" vrs "slow." I think its all about reps. Yeah, reps.  I don't want to increase bulk. I want lean muscles. But I'm a girl, so should I worry about bulking up?

Anyway, I was on Google looking up if my theory on "pumping" vrs "slow" lifting, and I found an article on running and weight lifting.  I don't want to link it because it made me sad.  It talked about how both are for and against each other.  I love running! I love P90x! I love both! So I don't want to give up one or the other.  It talked about how too much muscle mass is just weight that your body (knees, joint) has to carry while running and how to balance both.  It did say that both is do able, just have to give a take a bit from both. Since I'm dropping weight anyway, I'm not too worried about my joints.  I'll drop weight and gain muscle for now, and when I'm satisfied with that, I'll evaluate if I have to loose muscle to be an efficient runner. I don't think I'll ever be an elite, but I want to do well!!!

Speaking of elite runners, I watched the start of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon with the elites and watching them gave me goosebumps.  The way their bodies are so efficient in running. Its crazy! Like seriously, I was in awe! I want to meet Kara Goucher! Shes running the Nike Women's Marathon and if theres a meet & greet in the expo, I'm thinking of heading to the city!  As I was watching I was thinking about something super random.  I'm not going to be one of those parents that pushes their kids into something, but I swear as long as I have some influence, or a lot of, in their lives, I'm going to "lead" them into running.  I'll let them run around barefoot, have mini 3 yard races as soon as they crawl, then 10 yards when they walk and just have fun with it. If they want to stick with it, good, if they don't, well, at least I tried. Maybe we can have the first well known Fil-Am elite runner!!! Haha!  I don't want to live my dreams through them, I just want them to know how fun it is. Runners are some of the friendliest people I know and seriously, I want them to be kind. Okay, enough psycho babble! Its the endorphins talking!

Have a strong day everyone!

You Know You're A Runner When...

Power Food & Post Race Depression

First of all, its getting cold! I love this weather but I have no running pants or normal sweat pants that fit so I'm cold. Another sign of the times? Itchy throat & a cold!  My power food for this season?

HONEY!!! I've always used honey as "cough drops," and itchy throat medicine.  I was reading random articles online and I ran into this article >>Honey: The Facts from Runners World UK. It talks about how the sugar content of honey [glucose vrs. fructose]  is beneficial as a fuel source for energy source for runners.  Anyway, its just another justification for my honey obsession. It has to be organic tho.  If I over think things and analyze what honey "really" is, I'll start to get all shivery. The "organic" label helps my queasiness quotient go down a bit.

Moving on from my love of sweetness in the form of honey...

Lately I haven't been as motivated to run.  I feel like its purposeless.  I can't get myself motivated to loop the park. I really want to run at least 5 miles. I was supposed to do it to today but I wasn't motivated.  After running the NorCal half, I just haven't been motivated.  I would rather strength train. I've been going crazy on P90x but not at all for running.  Every time I leave my room, my running gear stares back at me with puppy dog eyes waiting to be used.  As I was reading articles, I also ran into this >>Post Race Depression and also this >>The Blues: Post Race Depression. Note that I didn't run a full marathon, I ran a half. Even so, I thought I was just going crazy or lazy. This is why I like to share life, because now I know I'm not going crazy, and that I'm not alone!

Personally, I think I just need to officially sign up for a race event, not a 10k or a 5k, but at least a half. I have a paid for voucher for the Hollywood Half next year in April but I still need to officially register.  I know for a fact I also want to do the Pasadena next year. Pasadena means a lot to me for various reasons, being the nostalgic person that I am, I would love to be able to do Pasadena yearly.  Pasadena is in May.  Those two events are far away tho.  I have a possible half the 23rd of this month, if I chose to stay in town; I have a planned trip to SoCal.  Aside from that, I have no other half planned.  One thing going for me is the 3:00 hour time limit for the Hollywood Half. I know for a fact I can do it, but I would love to be sub 2:30. I wonder if I can shave 38 minutes off my NorCal time?  I know I can sub 3 because during my NorCal run I was sick and one of the things only girl runners face, my period.  I don't plan to be either on the Hollywood Half.  I think I'll find a half between now and then and hopefully sub 2:45, so I'll be confident for a sub 2:30 for Hollywood Half.  I know thats slow compared to a lot of people, but its mine! See, just talking about it is motivating me to run.  I'm pretty sure I just need to be registered for an event to light a fire under my legs. Running has admittedly gotten to be lonely for me. I don't mind running or training alone, I don't want to slow anyone down, its being able to talk to someone about all this to someone who will be like "I GET IT!" Thats why I share life, I love company.

Running is one of those things that I really love and I'm still trying to understand.  Its like getting to know a friend and to do so, you have to push yourself over and over.  And just when you think you've pushed yourself and know running, you realize that you're on a whole new level and have no choice but to keep on pushing. Keep on running, keep on improving.

Its crazy.

But I wouldn't have it any other way.

Goals?

I'm rethinking my goals right now.

Or priorities.

I stayed in a constant weight the week leading up to my half marathon. It was agonizing not to drop because I know that I need the food to fuel my runs. I'm used to dropping anywhere from 2-5 pounds a week. And I still want to loose weight. I'm getting a little obsessed with numbers, tho I shouldn't be. I know muscles and jean size is a better indicator, but I can't help it. I also hate my height. I don't tell a lot of people this, but I don't like my height. Tall for Filipina, short for everyone else. I would rather be a couple of inches shorter because I like being Filipina. Haha.

Anyway, I want to cut back calories again from 1800-2000 to 1200. Maintain running and step up my strength training. But off the top of my head, I'm going to have to pick two from three and stick with it. The most logical and is just stay within the 1800-2000 calorie range and work hard on running and strength training, but there is no way I can do all three. But who knows. I'm pretty bad ass, or so I like to think.

I think I'm going to die tho with that little calories. I keep on getting lectured on by my Aunt who is a nurse. But it works for me. I still want to keep up running for sure. I already have a lot of half marathons lined up and its such a big part of my life now. Its crazy. So I can't give that up. Blah.

I need to step back tho and just remember to listen to my body.

I'm not going to carry weight the same as other people, so while the number may not be ideal, the size will be and I won't be a walking zombie.

Just trying to think things out. I'm re-organizing life and this is part of it.

Confessions Of A Snack-a-holic

I am a snack-a-holic.

I am a lazy eater. Super duper lazy eater. Don't get me wrong. I love food. Food is so darn good. But ask someone who knows me, I'm a lazy eater. I will wait till I'm so angry from hunger till I eat. Or I'll eat when someone tells me to. So if you catch me in a bad mood, you should just come with some food offerings. It will for sure turn my mood around because that means I haven't eaten.

Although I'm a lazy eater, I will have moments (like obviously NOW) where I will have a snack attack and turn into this snack-a-holic.

I didn't eat much this whole day so I'm probably going to be snacking till pretty late. I had toast with almond butter, some Mediterranean stuff I found in the fridge (thanks whoever!) and thats about it. Haha. Lazy eater!!! Hahaha. Maybe thats why I didn't get my run done. Lols.

And what is a runner-loosing-weight-while-still-fueling-for-run's snack of choice?

Pirates Booty

Pirates Booty is awesome! This one happens to be the veggie flavor but they have some cheese flavor ones that are equally awesome!!! I just picked this up cuz I always get the cheese ones and I wanted something new.  So why are they awesome?  First of all a bag is 4 servings at 130 calories each. I usually divvy em up in zip lock bags right when I get them so that I can pace my self.  Chips is one of those things that are bad for you if you don't watch it.  My mentality is, if I'm going to snack on chips, they might as well be organic! Haha.  But yeah. Not too bad for you compared to other chips! Try em!

Curious George Fruit Snacks MUST be the Curious George ones! Until they come out with a cheap version of Hello Kitty, it has to be Curious George!
Fruit snacks!!! You would think this would be like the biggest no-no in the world! But I actually use this in lieu of GUs when I run.  Sometimes I just want something to chew and fruit snacks are nothing but sugar and carbs and its conveniently portioned out in 100 calorie packets!!! So for those who need a little glucose boost- which GU does provide, but GU has caffeine and stuff too- this cheap alternative, about $2 per box for a packet of 6, will happily suffice!!! Is it still a snack if I use it to run?

Beef Jerky! I'm not picky of the brand but it has to be either beef or turkey, no pork.
Beef jerky! Protein! Nuff said! Hahaha. I like beef jerky. It gives my jaw a workout and gives me a lot of protein!  Beef jerky isn't that bad for you.  Some people say watch the sodium, but if you're putting in honest work in working out or running or in the best sport in the world- SOCCER, you're sweating and need that sodium anyway!!!

Yeah, so a random snack entry because I didn't eat meals today and got hungry and ran out- okay drove- to the store to get these and some green tea!

And for those who are questioning my choice of food, just to let you know, and yes I'm partially bragging here, I'm down 40 lbs =] Loosing weight/getting in shape, doesn't have to be that bad in terms of eating. Whoever told you it has to be that bad doesn't realize that you only have one life to live, you might as well live, and eat, it up!!! And I also don't eat like this everyday. If I did, this would NOT fuel me at all for my runs.

Dear White SUV Driver,

Being from Cali where everything and everyone, including the common garden snail, is in a hurry, I understand that your time is precious. I really do. My time is precious too.

But when I've been training and working hard for a half marathon a little over a month from now, and on what is supposed to be my rest day, I decided to run the mile and half to & from the store to get a can of coconut juice [not Zico! Stuff is nasty!] and you almost run me over when I had my "walk" sign on because you choose to not look before turning... well, yes, I'll be mad. I didn't train this long, this hard so that I can't run the half marathon because you decide not to look both ways before turning and ignoring that "walk" signal I had. It also doesn't help that you smile at me. Like thats going to get you anywhere with me. Your freakin SUV was so close to me that I could feel the air as you drove by. I could see the plaque on your teeth and that hair on your mole. I wanted to throw a rock at your car, but I didn't.

So yes, I understand that your time is precious. So is mine. But know this, life is precious; especially mine, EVERYONE'S life is precious. Next time you decide to turn, look both ways. Its not that hard. It was broad daylight, I'm wearing a bright ass pink shorts and a white jacket. I'm 5'6" tall and highly visible. Its not that hard to look both ways before turning.

I would like to live to see my 25th birthday please.

Sincerely,

Very Angry Runner

PS. As much as I hate looping in the park. Looks like thats where I will be at for a while.

EveryBODY Different

By no way am I a dietitian, a nutritionist, a personal trainer, nor do I consider myself knowledgeable about all things concerning health.  But what I do know comes from advice of those who knew before me and application of those advices and seeing what worked and didn't work for me. By no means am I anywhere near my ideal body (if you want to know its runners lean!) but I have no doubt that I can get there =] If you don't want to read the entire thing, its fine, just at least burn off 1 or 2 calories by scrolling all the way to the bottom of this post, the bottom line should help you. I'm also putting this right after telling you to scroll down cuz it has a greater chance of being read, know this as well: the way you look will not fix your insecurities. That statement will be left at that, just take it for what it is. You can add "not a shrink" to not a nutritionist or a personal trainer =]

I recently saw a bunch of family and friends in a party, I haven't seen them in at least 3 months. People have been asking what the hell I do. They all said one or more of these things
  • "You lost a lot of weight!"
  • "How much did you loose?"
  • "What do you do?"
  • "What do you eat?"
  • "You're disappearing!"
  • "I want to do what you're doing!"
There were also a few other random things I chose to leave out, they were weird comments 8-)

I'm going to be one of those people who say this, there is no magic pill, its pure diet & exercise!

Lets break it down yo! Grab popcorn (no butter) and get comfy!

Exercise
I, obviously, do a lot of running. But what you need to know is that running won't drop your weight for you. Haha. A lot of people think running is a cure all for weight loss, but from MY experience, it isn't! When I started running, I lost 5lbs and then didn't drop anymore for a month. It was like thats it?! And half of those was probably water weight from sweating so much!  So why the hell do you run?! I run because I love, I mean LOVE, the feeling of endorphins after my runs. Its crazy addicting. I also love seeing progress! Its one of those mental benefits of running. Running, is after all, just you and the road. You push yourself, you lift those damn legs, and move. Its for you, by you! That is why I run.  Why won't running help you loose weight? Running alone won't help you because its an aerobic exercise. Its good for your heart, its good for your lungs but really aside from your legs, you're not building muscles (remember: muscles burn more calories than fat). A lot of people say I'll go running to justify what they eat. There lies the problem. Remember its diet (which means what you eat, not cutting back on what you eat. It just means what you eat) AND exercise! So really, the approach most people take to running/exercising is a means to justify what they eat. Which is okay if you're trying to maintain weight, which I'm not, I'm trying to cut weight and gain muscle. And most of us is trying to cut weight. So do I attribute some of my weight loss to running. Most definitely! I do, but its not just running alone.  I also attribute a lot of mental benefits to running, but thats another blog entry =]

Like I said above, aside from your legs, running doesn't really help you build muscle. And unless you change up your running surface (trail or road) you're probably just working the same muscle groups all the time and still not building a lot of muscle since its constant strain on one set of muscle groups. So aside from running, I also do some strength training in the form of P90x!!! I love love love P90x! Its one of those things we all cringe at in the beginning but you get into it and you feel the burn and you feel bad ass! Especially since I'm a girl, I get all proud and feel all bad ass when I finish and finish well! P90x is an anaerobic exercise. I'm not going to go to deep into the difference between aerobic & anaerobic exercises, I'll let this website do the talking. For the link phobic, its like a hybrid vehicle, first they rely on the electricity part then when they hit the faster speeds, they rely on gas. For the most part, we rely on oxygen (aerobic) to fuel our cells, but when intensity is bumped the oxygen is not enough and the body relies on other chemical reactions to fuel itself- which creates lactic acid which is why we experience muscle fatigue. Obviously, P90x is a high intensity type of training. Any weight training regimen is intense and requires a lot of energy making it anaerobic.  I don't think you really had to know the difference. I just got carried away! Haha. Why is P90x necessary? Really, any strength training is necessary. First of all, it helps build muscles and when talking body, more muscle is always better! muscle > fat is always a good thing! Plus muscles help pull everything in. Weight may not change for a while, but you will drop inches and its better to go by inches rather than weight. A pound of muscle takes up less space than a pound of fat =]

So over all, the exercise part is running (cardio) & P90x (strength trianing). A good balance, 30 minutes of each is good, but really, people are lazy (including me sometimes!) so if you can only do one, strength train! Build those muscles and let them burn fat for you!

Diet
I'm going to start by saying this: diet doesn't mean you change your food intake, diet is simply what you intake. Diet has such a negative connotation, like I'm going on a "diet." In reality, you're already on one, it just depends if its a good or bad one.

Now that that is out of the way, I'm going to say one more thing: I'm on a very low calorie diet and I'm running and strength training at the same time. Albeit, I did cheat over this weekend when I was in SoCal, but thats why I'm so strict when I'm at home. With that said, here are the basic specs of what I do:

"Cat's Not Recommending this Diet" Diet
  • 1200 - 1800 calories a day; 6 meals 200-300 calories a day
    • The ratio I try to stick to: 50% protein, 30% carbs (cuz I run, I would generally do 20% & add the other 10% to protein) 20% fat.
  • Food List: eggs (mostly white), Ezekiel toast, cheese, 2 Balance Bars (2 meals right there), turkey breast, chicken breas, lettuce, brocolli (really any non starchy vegetables; but brocolli is my go to! High fiber, low GI!). Thats it. I have a boring food in take at home =]
  • Water or Green Tea
  • One day of cheating!
Macro-Nutrient Ratios
A lot of people rely on counting calories to control their diet.  Thats cool and all but think of food as fuel. You can consume 1200 calories of cake for an entire day but your body won't be fueled. Why? Your body is fueled by chemical reactions that uses carbs, proteins, & fats! A slice of cake will have fats (unhealthy ones) and carbs, but very little protein. So its also important to look at the macro-nutrients. Depending on what you want to try to do (like for me its cut weight & build muscle- low carb, high protein- while still providing enough energy to fuel my runs, which is hard cuz carb is fuel for runs but I really try to cut back on carbs for weight loss- which some say is unnecessary but I love bread the only way for me to do it is DO OR DIE!), ratios is something that you should look at. Generally speaking I believe 40% carbs, 30% protein, & 30% fat is what is the norm. It took me a long time to get ratios down, and to some extent, I still don't have it down, but once you have a basic understanding of ratios, you can start to manipulate your ratios, i.e. carb cycling! Carb cycling is something I tried to do but had a hard time doing since I'm so anti carbs, but I started doing it sub consciously, I won't talk about it too much till I get my head wrapped around it solidly, but it works! For those who are trying to loose weight and is putting in work in exercising (both kinds) I would just go with the 40/30/30 ratio. Once you figure out what your goals are, you can start to manipulate your ratios.

Thats it. I can break it down specifically to what I eat but generally speaking, thats how my diet consists like. I know a lot of people are asking for specific foods, but seriously if you ask my sisters or my parents who are at home, thats really the majority of what I eat. Preparations may be different, but I stick to those meats, veggies, bread, etc.

DISCLAIMER I don't recommend this diet because at my weight and height, my basal metabolism is almost 2000. That means to do nothing but lie in bed all day and keep my body functioning, I burn 2000 calories. I'm consuming 1200 calories a day and so by that calculation I'm already down 800 calories, take into consideration that I strength train and/or run everyday, means I'm really down on calories. This may seem bad ass, (& to be honest I sometimes think I have an eating disorder. Haha, I don't! I'm just really careful cuz I know I eat not so cleanly when I'm out of town, & I'm out of town a lot) but its dangerous. Do you see that flashing *DANGER* sign? Its there!

If its dangerous, why do you do it? Here is the beauty of exercising and "getting in touch" with your body. You learn to read your body. You learn to listen to your body and its demands. You learn to know what works for you and what doesn't.  I'm still learning this eating thing as well because I'm a very lazy eater. I don't want to complicate things and I'm sure theres variety of foods I can eat aside from turkey and chicken and turkey, but I like to keep it simple. I don't want to think too much since if I get information overload, I'll give up. It may also seem that I'm super duper strict food police, but I'm really not. I can be flexible when the occasion calls for it. If theres an occasion, I'll eat what I'm served. Like right now, I just got back form SoCal, land of good food a plenty, so you know I"m really strict on what I'm eating right now. I'm probably going to cut back on carbs some more unless its the day before a long run. And I'm going to bump up the intensity/duration of my strength training/runs. Generally speaking tho, what I listed above is what you'll see me eat. And it seems like its really little food, but I'll eat a ton of broccoli, like two crowns of broccoli. Or a big plate of salad. Its just learning what your body needs. For example, I learned through trial and error and learning how to read my body that if I have a long run the next day, I'll eat a bit more carbs the previous day (ratio manipulation!) and if I know I'm going to be in a rest day I'll ease up on the carbs and just load up on veggies. Its things like that.

So, if you don't recommend your diet what do you recommend?
Learning to read your body and your tummy and what it needs is probably the most important thing anyone can learn as opposed to being told what to eat. In a way, I believe we all know what to eat and what to avoid, we don't need to be told that. I will put up resources on this, but theres so many conflicting information in the internet that really, I would advice to read up, find something that you think is do-able for you. Do it. If it works, keep on doing it. If it doesn't find another thing. If it STOPS working, by that time, you'll probably be able to read your body. Like I said, I'm still learning, and by no means do I consider myself a nutritionist. PS. I'll update another post with resources. I'm sifting through a ton of them right now. LOLOLS! I will however say this, don't go by the food "plate" pyramid thing that the gov't released. Its bs!

EveryBODY is different. This is what worked for me, since a lot of you asked. I can go into so much details (like this isn't detailed right? I haven't even talked about my supplements! lol) but I think this is already wordy enough. I'm still on this journey, its really life long, and would be more than happy to help anyone out.  But I'm letting you all right now, what works for me, might not work for you at all. A lot of people just asked what I do, and heres my answer.

If you don't want to read the whole thing, just read the bottom line:

eat clean, train dirty & keep at it.

Battle Wounds!

When I was looking at my feet after my run, I saw my first ever blood blister!!! I was so happy that I have a blood blister from running. HAHAHAHAHA.

Its my first ever running battle wound blood blsiter!

Thats about it. I'm just trippen out about how the back of my left heel almost looks like a finger!

And the fact that I have a blood blister!!! From RUNNING! I also want to pop it but I just read to leave smaller ones in tact. Especially blood blisters to prevent bacteria from getting into my blood stream! How BAD ASS is that? I can get a bacterial infection in my blood stream if I pop my blood blister I got from RUNNING!!! BAD ASS!!! Can you die from that? That would be a pretty epic way to go! Dying from something you love doing!!!

Keep Going

Not sure if its cuz I didn't run Saturday or Sunday and only did one mile yesterday, but my motivation for running seemed to significantly drop over the weekend. From LEGGO! to Hell no! Maybe its the lack of endorphins and I'm going through withdrawals, but wouldn't that mean I would want to run like fifty miles? Or endorphins is like taking Red Bul as a chaser? Its a downer/upper? You want it but since you're stressed or not on your "happy drug," you just can't get up and get it? Haha. All this endorphin talk is really just excuse. I love the feeling of it, but really in the end, its up to me to get out and do it.

My fears and anticipation for the half this September and my full next year is on rage right now. Its crazy. But I've come to accept and understand that these feelings will come and go and that running has always been for me by me. Not for anyone else.

I'm probably just anxious. I love how I feel when I'm running when I'm working out when I'm out there doing something anything for my body. And thats something that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world right now.

Been going through a few non-running related things that has taken its toll on my mind and sometimes those things affect us physically as well. Just need to recognize that and move on from that. Running has also been my escape, my way to deal, with stress and I don't think I can be sane without running.

I'll be okay tho.  I know myself well enough that my anxiety will turn into excitement again and will light a fire for my motivation. Those little spurts of progress always motivates me and makes me smile. I don't think anyone understands the running part of running. Everyone seems to see me and see the "weight loss" aspect of running. But running has very little to do with that, the weight loss part is from watching what I eat. Running just ensures I'm always on a calorie deficit. But anyway, the running part of running is really what motivates me. Beating PRs, the mental drive after mile four and just being out there and doing something for me when for the longest time, I've been doing things for others, that is what I run for.

Cat, keep going. Keep going.

Just because you don'tw ant to doesn't mean  you can't. Keep going.

Pause!

I'm going to pause my carb cycling.

I'm having a hard time tracking my carbs and really eating that much carbs is a chore for me.  I'm kinda discouraged by it since it should be pretty simple, but its pretty hard for me, but there isn't a point dwelling on that. I'll just put it off till after the half.

I know I gained weight because of the two weeks I was on it, and I know my running will use up the fuel, but right now I'm frustrated cuz I have to think about what I eat and marathon training so I'm just going to pause that one aspect of life right now.

I also know I'm loosing muscle mass, which is also frustrating. I knew my P90x was going to suffer while training for the marathon, but I worked hard for what little muscles I have so I'm sad about that, but I'm going to kick that up a notch.

So right now, I'm just going back to really low carbs and listening to what my body needs after its run. If I need a little more carbs, I shouldn't/won't be afraid to eat some good for me carbs.

Also, being a girl runner sucks. I think guys have it better, here is a list why:
  • Guys don't have boobs. They don't need to spend at least $20 for a really good bra. I double up my bras and it gets really hot and uncomfortable.
  • Guys don't have periods. You don't have to be bloated, crampy, and irritated.
  • Guys have bodies that were built to run. Girls have child bearing bodies.
Those are just some reasons that randomly came up in my head. I hate having to deal with the first two. The last one, that isn't really an issue cuz our bodies are smart and adjust. But imagine running in 90 degree heat, wearing two sports bras and on your period. That is probably the worst case scenario for a girl.

I'm also thinking up more races for the future. I'm going to be traveling a lot till the end of the year and I'm excited for that, but it makes it difficult to see which races I can do. I really want to do another 5k soon, even a 10k, but there isn't much events in my area.

Debating about doing the inaugural Hollywood Half but its really expensive for a half, and I'll have to travel down there, which means it will probably cost me 3x the registration over all to just do the run. I don't mind, since I can see my fam there, but at the same time, why can't NorCal just be more runner and marathon friendly? It will save me some serious cash!

But planning trips AROUND marathons are also fun! I want to do the Niagara Marathon which is the only marathon that spans two countries! You need a PASSPORT to run the race! How exciting is that? I also want to do Peachtree next year! And just so many random events. I'm so excited. I wish someone would take up the same interest as me and would find all this worthwhile cuz traveling is always fun with someone! But I know my friend wants to check out random places anyway, she should be down to travel (not necessarily run) with me!

Haha!

Running & cross training. All in one day. Because I can.

Because in 2 days, I will be more strict with my training and I can't.

Date A Girl Who Runs

Read this in one of the many running communities I follow.

Date a girl who runs. Date a girl who chooses to move than to let the world pass her by. She will cover the roads with you while talking about the mundane to the profound without gasping for air. She will notice and appreciate the little things: the extra cushioning of her shoes, the softness of the pavement vs concrete, or how much cooler it is to run 30 minutes earlier in summer.

Take her to a race and be there with her 30 minutes before gun start. You will watch her fret over her gels, and her hydration, and the portalets. You will laugh because she gives so much importance to running as if it was her entire life. But, you will learn later on that it only shows how passionate she can be about what is important for her.

Hold her jittery hands before you enter the assembly area. She will hope to break her PR at the half marathon, but do not wish her luck; she won’t need it after all the speed work and tempo runs. Instead, show her a reassuring smile that she’ll be fine and that you’ll be proud of her whether she finishes first or 50th. Let her know that you’ll be waiting at the finish line—or at least you’ll show up there in case she finishes several minutes before you do.

If you find a girl who runs, never let her go; register for a marathon and train together. Be her best friend on the road. When she talks, listen to the joys of her first 5k, the pains of her recurring Plantar Fasciitis, and the 1,001 reasons why she loves to run while pretending that you can keep up with her “easy” pace. In between stories, allow her to take a sip from your water bottle or remind her when it’s time to take a gel. Watch her glow when she talks about running; she is in her element. She is running by your side.

She is happiest on Sundays, the day when she can run long with you. She loves to sweat, and the sore legs, and, of course, the hefty breakfast along with the good conversations that follow each run. Always have a cold, wet towel in the cooler waiting for her. Surprise her with her favorite post-recovery drink, low fat chocolate milk, and if she runs an extra 5km, spike it with her favorite coffee from Starbucks. In her simple joys, you will find an abundance of happiness.

Propose after your first marathon abroad. Or drop the ring in her hydration bottle. Or run the trails together and end with a proposal at sunset.

When you marry a girl who runs, the only time you will see her slow down is when she walks down the aisle towards you. She’ll be a picture of beauty and strength in a gown with her running shoes upon her feet and all you will be able to think of is the thousands of kilometers you will run together. You will find the best running partner in her. You will talk about the household, career, and finances during your long runs. You will fight during your hill training and make up during easy runs.

She will never force your children to run, but they will learn to love it when they see her passion for running. She will make living a healthy, active life easy, natural, and best of all, fun. Expect a lot of laughter, sweat, and sports beans. Running will not be a sport, but it will be a way of life for you and your children.  You will never run alone.

Love a girl who runs and she will love you back the same way she loves running. You will ask her why she loves running and she’ll answer: Because I can. You will ask her why she loves you and she’ll reply: Because I do.

Good Intentions

I'm so discouraged right now.

I really didn't know at first where this came from, but I think I know.

Its from "good intentions" from other people.

I know people mean well, I chose to believe the best. I don't think anyone wants harm towards lovable me.  Its just hard when someone comments on something that you're working hard on and yeah, while they have good intentions, it sometimes comes off the wrong way.

I'm working hard on this whole loosing weight thing while trying to improve my running and train for that half. Don't totally diss what I'm doing as completely wrong. I'm working hard on it.  A cookie once in a while is okay, using kinder/gentler words to voice your concern is also okay.

No one knows how much toll this is taking on my body and my mind but me. And I'm already pretty hard on myself because I'm so dissatisfied of where I'm at.

Folks, I know you mean well, I really know you do. I know you love me and want the best for me.  Just please, I'm the type to be encouraged by words [if you want to encourage me or make me sad, use words, it will affect the heart right away] use kinder words.

Sort It Out

I get antsy when I have too much time to think about things. I thrive under pressure. When I had to write papers or have comps, I usually churn out my best work the last minute. The only 100% grade my English teacher ever gave was to me, and it was a paper I worked on until 3 am the day of.

I am officially registered for the half marathon and like I mentioned, I have some trepidations about the run.

I know & I know that if I keep up with training, which I so plan to, that I will probably better do way better than my predictions right now. So I really have no reason to be so worried about not finishing and finishing last- which are my two greatest fears about this run.

To be honest, my self-image is always on low. Its not that I'm running this half to loose weight, really I just mentioned that because deep down, I seriously feel like I don't belong.  To me its like seeing a Hummer in a Nascar event.  And did I just compare myself to a Hummer? Damn. Its worst than I thought. I really don't want to be self-depreciating, I don't want this to turn into something where I'm constantly wearing my self esteem down. Its not healthy. I'm just being honest here.

Really tho, if this event is anything at all like the Pasadena, runners are some of the friendliest, welcoming, motivating & encouraging group of community I've ever met.  Regardless of where you are physically or anything, they are always there to encourage. The pavement is always there to be ran on. Its just on you.

And right now, its exactly that.

This run is on me.

I do want to do it. Don't get me wrong. I'm scared, I'm nervous, I have feelings of inadequacy but I do want to do this.  I'm the type of person who will ride out what they feel because if I suppress it, its going to eat me up. But yes, I do want to do this.

I'm determined to put in the work, I'm determined to go out there and train, I'm determined to see results. I'm determined to do this for me.

I'm thankful for those who constantly remind me that yes, I can. Even when I feel like I can't. I'm the type to be encouraged by words, and in the same vein, I'm also easily discouraged by words. And we all know we can be our worst and best motivators.  As someone said, "don't let that fail seed© grow" (yes, its copyrighted!). I think my fail seed is my self-image. My fail seed is the fact that because of my poor self image, I have already discounted myself to loose. Even if I am motivated to work hard, and am working hard, I have already filed myself into the "fail" category.  Its not a good thing to think that way. I maybe getting fit physically but mentally I'm breaking down.

I know that its ultimately up to me to change the way I think. And I know that every training I do, every hill I conquer, every run I take, I'm taking a step towards proving myself wrong.

Each step, each hill, each run is me telling my self that I can in fact do this. That I am capable. That its my decision and I'm out there doing it, that says something you know. That while I feel like I'm a Hummer in a Nascar race, its a Hummer going out there doing work and holding her own.

So from now on, I resolve to believe the best in me. I sincerely believe the best in others, why can't I do the same about me?

Run, Cat! Run!

Yesterday was supposed to be a tempo or long run.

It turned out to be my normal run of 3 miles, half of which was done outside in 86 degree heat and the other half in the treadmill, the boring-mill.

It was so hot and sunny outside that when I was finished, I could wring out my clothes for sweat. It was disgusting. I want to run today but I have to wash my sports bra. The perks of being a girl -_- NOT! I need to buy more but I'm really picky.

Today, according to my Google calendar, I'm supposed to be doing chest & back for P90. I'll do it in a while, maybe I can wash my clothes while P90'ing and I can get my run in later if its not blazin hot. Its supposed to hit 90 today.

Head Up

Today is a new day! Yesterday was horrible in terms of mentality and self esteem. It was very horrible.

Days like that happen tho, and its up to me if I want to let it get to me or not.

I'm the biggest dreamer, I set the bar high, but at the same time I'm also easily discouraged so I take that bar down.

I was really worried and bothered by the half.

The fear of not finishing, of passing out, of everything pretty much anything wrong that could happen was in my head yesterday.

I went for a run even tho I wasn't "supposed" to to clear my head and it didn't work but had a good talk with a friend and that helped a lot.

Its a new day. I put in work yesterday and I'm really happy about that, it was just all in the mind. Which is really just as important as the physical stuff.

Anyway, its a new day! Smile!!!

I'm going for either my tempo or long run later on today. I couldn't do it early in the morning because I didn't eat enough yesterday. I can tell I would have nothing to fuel my body. I could take my GU, that I bought out of guilt because I took up so much time at RR but didn't buy shoes, but that won't last if I have nothing to begin with.

600 & 0

I'm currently at 600 calories right now at 8:13 pm.

I did P90x this morning had a protein shake (120) & greek yogurt (100) = 220

Went to work for four hours.

Had a turkey "burger" (bread: 80, cheese 70, turkey patty 170 [where can i find turkey patties that are lower than that damn 170!]) = 320

Then had some strawberries = 49

Went for a run just now & ate nothing.

TOTAL = 589

Round it up to 600 because its almost there anyway.

This is compulsive calorie counting for me & its normally my signal to chill & stop. I'm really peeved at my weight and I really want it to change fast.  This mentality is what gets me in trouble because I won't eat. I'm already a lazy eater to begin with. Like really lazy but I seriously need to change this mindset.  Its not helping me mentally or physically to think this way.

My self esteem is at 0 but not eating right won't fix that.

I should force myself to eat -_-

---Edited to Add---

Its 10:34 pm

I ate a turkey patty at 170 and a Balance Bar at 200

for a grand total of 970.  Its not entirely my daily requirement, but better than 600. I can feel the lack too since I ran and P90'ed.

Dear Cat,

Sure you were discouraged and your self esteem is at zero, but today is almost done. Tomorrow doesn't have to be the same.

Love,
Cat
